Lent Meditation: Day 4 - February 21, 2026
📖 Scripture Verse
“Deep calls to deep at the thunder of your cataracts; all your waves and your billows have gone over me.” Psalm 42:7
🕯️Meditation
“I’m drowning.”
“I’m up to my neck.”
“I feel like I’m underwater here.”
“I’m in too deep.”
“We are taking on water.”
“The ship is sinking.”
We have so many idioms and metaphors for being in trouble that refer to rough or dangerous waters. The ancient Israelites too saw the sea as a symbol of chaos, trouble, and death. The psalmist talks about one watery trouble calling to another with him in the middle. (Between the devil and the deep blue sea!). Later in the psalm the psalmist calls for himself to have hope—God has not forgotten him even in the terrible trouble he is in. It can be hard to remember that God is a rock when we are in desperate trouble. “If he’s a rock, where is he? Why do I have nothing to grab onto here?” we may say to ourselves. When Jesus’ disciples were being destroyed by a storm on the sea, they too cried out, “Lord, save us! We are perishing.” (Matthew 8:25).
When we find ourselves in great trouble, we can join with the psalmist and the disciples and cry out for help. The storm may not calm instantly. We may suffer great troubles. Our God is a God who hears us, and praying in time of turmoil is of great spiritual power.
🙏 Prayer
Almighty God, sometimes I feel lost at sea. I don’t know if you are hearing me. Please listen to me when I pray and help me know I’m not alone. Don’t leave me in the power of the deep. Rescue me, O Lord. Amen.
